How to NOT gain weight this holiday season
...while still enjoying every minute
’Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry, right? Absolutely! The holidays are a time for celebrating, not feeling sad because you can’t eat anything — or guilty because you ate everything. If you’re smart about each event and don’t go on a six-week cookie bender, you’ll avoid holiday weight gain and be ten pounds ahead of everyone else on New Years Day.
Here are my top four holiday eating rules:
1. Don’t try to lose weight
Instead: Just don’t gain weight. Go to parties, drink the champagne and eat the pie… but don’t do it every single day—and keep up your regular exercise routine throughout the season.
One day is not going to ruin you. Get right back on track with your usual healthy eating the next day and you’ll be just fine. If I’ve been particularly bad one day, I’ll just do a quick Cleanse the next day to snap out of it… works every time.
2. Don’t let one party bleed into the next week — or month
When the party’s over so is the food. Keep the cocktails and treats contained within the event. When you walk out the door — or the last guest leaves — it’s over. Don’t bring two plates of leftovers home or hoard a dozen cookies in your purse on the way out the door. There are people at local shelters who need that extra food more than you do.
3. Start smart
Before the wine lowers your inhibitions, pile up your plate with veggies, protein and fat like nuts and cheese. If your body’s actually satisfied it’s a lot less likely to send you running for the dessert tray in a few hours.
4. Eat right on your “off” days
If there’s no party today, there’s no reason to eat or drink too much today. If you’re splurging daily for two months straight, special events or special dishes (like your grandmom’s famous cake) are no longer special.
Cheers to the most wonderful time of the year!
